You can tell the frustration and anger felt by President Trump in this recent Truth Social post.
He plainly accuses Ukrainian President Zelensky of obstructing peace negotiations in the Russia-Ukraine war by refusing to recognise Russian control over Crimea. Trump has claimed that a deal to end the conflict was “very close” but that Zelensky’s stance, particularly his rejection of U.S.-proposed terms, would only prolong the war. It is a war Ukraine cannot win.
This accusation followed remarks by U.S. Vice-President JD Vance, who outlined a potential U.S.-backed peace plan. Vance suggested that the agreement would “freeze the territorial lines” close to their current positions, implying that both Ukraine and Russia would need to cede some of the territories they currently control.
This proposal would effectively require Ukraine to relinquish its claim to Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.
Zelensky, however, firmly rejected any notion of recognizing Russian control over Crimea, stating,
“There’s nothing to talk about here. This is against our constitution.”
However, Crimea should be the easiest concession for Zelensky to make for several reasons;
1) It’s been part of Russia for the last decade. Crimea was annexed by the Russian Empire during the reign of Catherine The Great in 1783 and remained part of Russia until 1954. Historically it is Russian
2) The vast majority of its population are ethnic Russians who (as western polling shows) want to be part of Russia.
3) Ukraine has no military way to retake it. The disastrous Summer Counteroffensive of 2023 made that abundantly clear. If Zelensky won’t concede this, he won’t concede anything, so a deal with him is impossible.
Rubio is right to walk away.
Ukraine CANNOT withstand Russia without US military and Intelligence.
Trump should make it clear that until Zelensky drops his outrageous preconditions, he is on his own. The Europeans only have bluster, America has might.
It’s time Zelensky fell and this grift started by Obama in 2014 ended.
