Author from Shillong, Salil Gewali was recently honored with the prestigious “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Rashtra Prem Samman Award” by the Mumbai-based youth organization – ‘Yuva Heet Karini Sangh’. The organization’, known for its commitment to youth empowerment, social welfare, and the promotion of India’s literary heritage, has been actively promoting Gewali’s acclaimed book — ‘Great Minds on India’ — ever since it was formally released by the then Governor Shri C. Vidyasagar Rao and Maharashtra’s Education Minister Shri Vinod Tawde at Raj Bhavan in 2015. The Marathi edition of the book was edited and featured a preface written by the former Additional Chief Secretary of the Government of Maharashtra, Smt. Leena Mehendale.
The secretary of the organization, Shri Babu Suthar, stated that Gewali’s book has made a profound contribution to the nation by inspiring young minds with the literary and philosophical treasures of ancient India — a legacy that has influenced some of the greatest scientists, philosophers, and writers worldwide.
NASA Chief Scientist and Director Dr. Kamlesh Lulla of Houston praised Gewali’s book, saying:
“Once in a while, a rare and thoughtful publication comes to life that transforms you, enlightens you, and enriches your knowledge. Mr. Salil Gewali’s Great Minds on India is such a publication. Its timely arrival offers readers deep insights into India’s immense contributions to global thought, through the words of some of the world’s greatest minds.”
In 2024, the Arabic edition of the book was released in Qatar and Dubai, and in April this year, the Punjabi edition was launched by the Language Department of the Government of Punjab. The Punjabi translation was undertaken by Shri Alok Chawla, Assistant Director of the department.
Originally brought out in Xerox format in 1998 and published in print in 2009, Gewali’s research-based work has since been translated into fifteen languages, including a print and kindle edition published by the prestigious international publishing company—Penguin Random House.
