Yesterday saw President Trump proclaim “Liberation Day” as the United States finally applied *reciprocal” tariffs on many countries around the world. What does “reciprocal” mean – as this seems to have escaped the focus of the legacy media? Well. it’s simple, if your Nation imposes tariffs on US imports the US will respond in kind of your exports. However, Trump was actually generous and chose not to impose FULL reciprocity but rather about 50% of what the US gets hit.
So why is anyone crying?
It’s my view that these US tariffs have a simple objective and that is to restore global trading fairness. Those nations now facing US tariffs can very simply make them go away. All they need do is strip away their own protectionist tariffs and the US will most likely reciprocate! This is not rocket science!
So why the howls of indignation from the likes of the EU?
It’s because the EU is a highly protectionist market that is focused on stopping free trade. It’s been like that for some time and it casually imposes punitive tariffs and non-tariff impediments on US imports. It’s got away with this until yesterday but its luck just ran out! The confected outrage from Brussels should no fool anyone although it does belie the arrogant globalist mindset that sees the US ripped off on a colossal scale.
Another aspect to all of this the EU contains many individual nations with specific industry concerns. Take Ireland – which is the MOST exposed of any EU Nation given the importance of Pharma and Tech exports to the USA. The EU is a collectivist organisation so it has to respond as a whole and the Irish will not be cut a side deal. So Ireland may well teeter into recession over the next 12 months and should the EU respond with any further counter tariffs, this will speed up Irish destruction.
Yes, there will be short term pain for all but there is no alternative. The message from Trump is clear – don’t tariff US and we won’t tariff you!
