Sometimes destiny is so obvious people cannot see it but the one thing that signposts it is demography.

Just consider this, if you will.

Births to UK-born mothers are at a low of 422,000 per year. This seems to be the lowest in more than 220 years. Even in 1805, when the UK population was only 11.2m, there were still more births per year, 440,000, than there are to UK born mothers today. You have to go back to 1800 when the UK population was only 10.5m to find a number of births per year that’s lower than today. In 1800, there were 388,000 live births per year.

So what does this devastating plunge in births to UK born mothers actually mean and why should we be concerned about it?
