Should Derek Chauvin be pardoned?

A campaign to have President Trump pardon Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted in the death of George Floyd, has gained traction among some conservative figures, including Ben Shapiro of the Daily Wire. Shapiro and others argue that the evidence does not conclusively show that Chauvin’s actions directly caused Floyd’s death, pointing to medical reports indicating no life-threatening injuries from the restraint, and suggesting that Floyd’s death was influenced by other factors like substance use and underlying health conditions.

Elon Musk has also engaged with the topic.

So should Derek Chauvinism be pardoned? I think he should because he was never guilty in the first place. He went through a show trial and his unfair incarceration must end. All lives matter, including his.

The trial was unfair due to intense unhinged media coverage and threats from left wing agitprop groups like Black Lives Matter and Antifa, creating a toxic atmosphere. Comments from figures like Rep. Maxine Waters, urging confrontation if no guilty verdict, were seen as influencing the jury, with the judge noting potential appeal grounds

I don’t believe that Chauvin intended to actually kill Floyd, with his conviction for unintentional second-degree murder suggesting that his actions, though perhaps excessive, weren’t meant to cause death, potentially warranting a much lighter sentence. The 22.5-year sentence handed out was very harsh, especially compared to other police officer cases.

Derek Chauvin has suffered enough. Time to set him free and let him breathe again.
