Well, I have to admit, I didn’t think I would actually live to see the moment when Reform leader Nigel Farage timidly played the race card by invoking Islamophobia when it came to perfectly legitimate criticism reform chairman Zia Yusuf. Is Yusuf now beyond any criticism because of his faith?

Let’s be absolutely clear: it is absolutely wrong to attack anybody purely on the basis of their skin or faith and I have no time for those who do that. However, the blistering storm of criticism that has gone the way of Zia Yusuf has been because of the *atrocious* manner in which he has handled the dismissal from Reform of popular MP Rupert Lowe. Rather than try to deal with this issue, Nigel Farage deflect it entirely onto “muh racism” and to my mind that exudes political cowardice.

You don’t have to agree with Robert Lowe to accept that the way in which his removal from the party was handled was both incompetent and fundamentally undemocratic.

In trying to recast this issue as being all about nasty Islamophobia, Nigel Farage does a great disservice to the many rank-and-file reform members who simply wanted to understand what it was that Robert Lowe had done that was so very wrong that it needed his public political defenestration. As someone wittily commented, Nigel will be sharing his pronouns with us by the end of the week!
