It’s an argument that splits our ranks. After its catastrophic DEFEAT at the polls last month, should we pine our hopes on somehow recapturing the Conservative Party and making it viable again? Those such as Reclaim Leader Laurence Fox argue that it is the only way forward;
Now Laurence is perfectly entitled to his view, it is more positive iteration of the Peter Hitchens “Doom” prognostications BUT I have to take issue with him.
For starters, it has been decades of political failure by the Conservatives that finally destroyed them on Jul 4th. It wasn’t Reform.
From my perspective, that which is called the ‘Conservative” Party has long ceased being conservative. When it dumped Thatcher in 1990 that was really the end and ever since it has been a sustained ritual humiliation with Major, Cameron, May and Johnson all being utterly hopeless in different ways. The only moment that it looked there might be some modest salvation was during the Liz Truss mini-era but she was brought down double quick to be forever mocked. Sunak was much more the style the Conservative elite wanted and look how that one ended up!
I look at this lot of aspirants to be next Leader of the Conservative Party and despair. It seems to me that the choice is no choice as they are ALL tainted in different ways and have proven largely ineffective. Authentic Conservatives such as Suella Braverman are banished to the sidelines. Thoughtful Conservatives like Lord Frost write their tomes but they have little control over the Party.
It seems to me that the Conservatives are simply part of the blob Uniparty and must be destroyed. Laurence may not like Reform, and I can understand why, but their policies are much more based and more in tune with traditional Conservative politics. Laurence also says we are not going to vote for ourselves out of this so why does he think supporting this Conservative Party is going to improve our fortunes?
We face a dilemma and people will hold different views but more of the same will not work. We need to BREAK the mould, not remodel it!
