I wonder did you see the story about a man in the US State of Iowa being prosecuted for causing damage to a statue of Baphomet. If that wasn’t strange enough, we discover that the statue itself was part of a display inside the State Capital building – so it had the blessing and authority of the State itself. The man concerned, Brian Connolly (Not to be confused with the sadly deceased lead singer of The Sweet), took exception to what he saw as the Satanic display and ripped it down. This is seen as a Hate Crime felony and his origin sin against Satan is to be punished!
It gets even stranger when we read that the Satanic display is by the Massachusetts-based Satanic Temple which says it doesn’t believe in Satan but describes itself as a “non-theistic religious organisation” that advocates for secularism. It is separate from the Church of Satan, which was founded in the 1960s.
In truth, Baphomet is NOT viewed as Satan but rather some sort of symbol first spotted in 1098, in a letter by Anselm of Ribemont, it has been seen as a sign of evil, and even adopted as a satanical insignia in the 1960s. It has been associated with all manner of heretical acts and a means to discredit other cultures and beliefs. To claim it is secular, however, seems a bit of a stretch!
Tearing down statues seems popular in the USA at this time and whilst I don’t approve of this in general, I can’t see that Mr Connelly did anything other than good in tearing this graven image down! Satan laughs at our weakness if we nod and say we should accommodate any such idolatry!
