The ups and downs of Substack

Substack is a Curate’s egg of a platform – good and bad in parts!

I have experienced some exhilarating highs and lows these past few months and thought I might write them out here.

Back in February, I causally posted this (image above) and I gained around 600 new followers in the next month! The volume of traffic was phenomenal, my phone runneth over with daily notifications. It came at a good time as I had been getting a bit despondent as to how I could further grow my platform here! Then, in the subsequent month, all that growth has ceased! I kept most of those who had subscribed but it’s been a downer watching the number tick down.

I still don’t know HOW or WHY the post above gained such traction – no other post I have written comes anywhere near it. Furthermore, I don’t even think it was THAT great a post and yet it gained such traction!

I have now settled into a DAILY routine of around three posts a day, two absolutely free to read and one for those who really support me by subscribing. Some days I push out even more. I really enjoy the writing process, I love the people who comment here, I read all that you say. In fact the most encouraging aspect of being here is the reader. You are all amazing, a fantastic group of people. I compare the calibre of my readers here to the 253,000 who follow me on X and it way nicer.

That’s really all I wanted to say. I appreciate you all.

I hope more will think my content worthy of £5 a month if you can stretch that far.
