Here’s something about me you don’t know!
My Uncle Norman was a musician and played several instruments but saxophone was his preferred instrument. He played it in a dance band back in the 1950’s and as a child in the 1960’s I remember seeing it in his house when I would visit him. It looked formidable and I really wish I had seen him play it professionally but I was too young. As he got older he stopped playing it. However I have always enjoyed hearing songs that feature the saxophone and here are THREE that I bet you like too!
First up, “Careless Whisper” by George Michael. This was his first solo Number One in 1984 and a cracking song, distinguished by sweeping saxophone. Give it a listen to hear what I mean;
Next up is the awesome Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty, his biggest hit in 1979.
Finally, I offer you David Bowie’s 1975 gem “Young Americans”. Bowie also played the saxophone and it was a feature of many of his songs
In all cases, these are great songs but the saxophone is the memorable sound in each of them. There is something so rich and evocative about it!
