Did you see that in a calculated and provocative move, the UK’s Sentencing Council has rejected calls from the Labour government to revise its new sentencing guidelines, which plainly discriminates against white, heterosexual men.
The guidelines, allegedly implemented to ensure “consistency” in judicial rulings, have drawn ire for creating a “two-tier” system that imposes harsher penalties on this demographic compared to others. The decision, reported yesterday, has sparked heated debate about fairness, equality under the law, and the influence of identity politics in the justice system.
The contention stems from rules that prioritise leniency for certain groups based on race, gender, or sexuality, while leaving white straight men subject to stricter punishment for similar offences!
The government, led by Sir Keir Starmer, has pressed the Council to reconsider, with Starmer telling GB News that “all options are on the table” to address the perceived inequity. However, the Council stood firm, asserting that the guidelines do not require revision and attributing the backlash to “widespread misunderstanding.”
They would say that!
The Sentencing Council’s refusal to amend its stance has fueled accusations of institutional bias. Supporters of the guidelines argue they are designed to account for systemic disadvantages faced by marginalised groups, not to punish white straight men disproportionately. They contend that socioeconomic factors, historical oppression, and judicial discretion necessitate nuanced sentencing practices. This is just so much crap. Justice should be blind, not tailored to identity categories, and the current framework risks alienating large swathes of the population by codifying unequal treatment.
The Council has not released any detailed data to substantiate its claim that no revision is needed. So it is plainly asserting itself OVER the wishes of the elected Government. The government’s next steps remain unclear. Starmer’s ambiguous response suggests political pressure may yet force a reckoning, though the Council’s independence could complicate intervention.
So who IS the “Sentencing Council’? Well, it comprises 14 members, including eight judges and six non-judicial members with expertise in the criminal justice system. The President is Lady Justice Carr.It is an unelected judicial quango put in place in the final days of the Blair/Brown Government.
It asserts that the colour of your skin, or your religion persuasion, or your sexual preferences must be taken into account as Judges weigh up sentences. The one group for which there is to be no pre-sentencing consideration is straight white men!
