Pathological lying – the route to power

Last summer saw the Labour Party sweep to power in the UK, with its Leader Sir Keir Starmer promising that his regime would be one that is truthful with the British people. I guess that was the first lie, but there have been so many since then. Now perhaps politicians will ALL pivot around political nuance expecting them to be honest about THEMSELVES doesn’t seem too unreasonable – but as time passes we are discovering they literally can’t stop lying!

Let’s take a look at some of the most prominent exponents of being economical with the truth.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves was the first to come under scrutiny and deservedly so! Here are the there main issues concerning her!

  1. Job Title at Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS): Reeves initially described her role at HBOS from 2006 to 2009 as an “economist” on her LinkedIn profile and in public statements, such as during her 2010 campaign for Leeds West. However, investigations and accounts from former colleagues suggest her role was more administrative, involving tasks like managing complaints, IT, and support functions rather than high-level economic analysis. Hence the “Rachel from Accounts” sobriquet. Her LinkedIn was later updated to reflect “retail banking” at Halifax instead of “economist” at Bank of Scotland, prompting accusations of embellishment.

  2. Time at the Bank of England: Reeves has claimed she worked at the Bank of England for “a decade” or “the best part of a decade” in various interviews, such as with Stylist magazine in 2021. Her LinkedIn profile, however, lists her tenure as September 2000 to December 2006—about six years and four months. This includes time spent on a master’s degree at the London School of Economics and a stint at the British Embassy in Washington, reducing her active time as an economist at the Bank. The BBC later reported she left by March 2006, further shortening the timeline.

  3. Published Work Claim: More recently, in February 2025, reports emerged that Reeves’ entry in “Who’s Who” claimed she contributed to the Journal of Political Economy, a prestigious academic journal. No evidence supports this, and it’s suggested this was an error or exaggeration, adding to the narrative of misleading credentials.

Reeves has simply passed all this off as mere tittle-tattle and a deflection from the serious work that she is doing (destroying the UK economy)! She has been caught out and is shamelessly brass necking it.

Angela Rayner is the Deputy Prime Minister and she also has some questions to answer! The controversy stems from varying accounts of how long she worked as a carer:

  • Her “Who’s Who” entry lists her as a “home help” from 1998 to 2005, suggesting seven years.

  • In a 2020 Facebook post, she wrote, “Exactly 5 years ago tonight after 14 years service in Local Government as a home care worker I left Stockport Council,” implying she worked there until 2015, totaling 14 years with the council alone.

  • In 2023, defending her council house sale, she claimed “17 years as a care worker,” which would stretch her timeline further.

As time goes along, she seems to be further extending her time as a Care Worker! A litany of inaccuracy is the kindest one can be about it all.

Then let’s look at the Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds.

He has faced significant scrutiny over claims that he misrepresented his professional background by stating he was a solicitor. The controversy hinges on several instances where he described himself as a solicitor, despite never completing his training and thus never qualifying as one under UK law.

When his colleague, Culture Minister Lisa Nandy was asked about the suggestion Reynolds had lied, she then lied by denying it. Watch this exchange to see what I mean.

He stood up in Parliament and SAID he was a solicitor. She said he did not!!

And so it goes and goes, a Parliament of liars!
