Today, Easter Saturday, holds profound theological and spiritual significance for Christians as a day of transition, reflection, and anticipation within the Paschal Triduumthe three-day period encompassing Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday.

Today is the day between Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and burial on Good Friday and His glorious resurrection on Easter Sunday, representing a space in the Christian narrative where themes of death, waiting, hope, and divine mystery converge.

Today is a day of silence and stillness, symbolising that time when Jesus’ body lay in the tomb. It was a monumental moment. This period is understood as Christ’s descent into the realm of the dead, often referred to as the “Harrowing of Hell”

According to this doctrine, rooted in passages like 1 Peter 3:19–20 and the Apostles’ Creed, Jesus descended to the underworld to proclaim victory over death and liberate the righteous souls who had died before His coming. This act underscores Christ’s triumph over sin and death, affirming His divine authority even in the depths of human mortality. Theologically, it bridges the Old and New Covenants, extending salvation to those who preceded Christ’s earthly ministry.

Today also embodies the human experience of waiting and uncertainty. For the disciples, this day was marked by grief, confusion, and fear, as they mourned Jesus’ death without yet knowing the resurrection. Can you imagine what they must have felt? This mirrors the Christian life, where believers are called to trust in God’s promises amid apparent absence or silence. The day invites reflection on faith in the face of despair, encouraging us Christians to hold fast to hope in God’s redemptive plan. It is a reminder that God’s work continues even in moments of seeming inactivity, preparing the way for transformation and renewal.

Easter Saturday also engages with the mystery of God’s kenosis—self-emptying love. Christ’s descent into the tomb and the underworld reflects the depths to which divine love will go to redeem humanity. It highlights the paradox of divine power manifested in vulnerability, as God enters the human condition fully, even to the point of death and burial. It’s mind blowing yet soul redeeming.

Today is THE day of transition, it prepares the faithful for the joy of Easter, affirming that even in darkness, God’s work is unfolding, culminating in the triumph of life over death.

Jesus is King.
