One of the most dangerous suggestions I have heard recently came from a German Minister who has called for the UK and France to deploy a ‘nuclear shield’ over Europe to deter a possible Russian strike amid fears NATO may no longer be able to count on US support should Donald Trump win November’s presidential elections.
What? The Germans want the UK to get involved with France in deploying this nuclear shield cos Orange Man Bad? Listen, the UK should not be playing nuclear games of any sort and the idea that we have any obligation towards Europe is risible. The same EU that allows limitless immigration to the beaches of northern France, that actively seeks to subvert Brexit? Are they kidding.
The truth of the matter (and this is where Trump is right) is that far too many European countries have piggy-backed on NATO without paying their way. A second truth is that NATO itself is a danger to world peace so in a sense, it should be defunded. You see the dichotomy?
I don’t believe that there is any prospect of a “Russian strike” unless NATO actually attacks Russia directly, currently is is doing this indirectly via Ukraine. So this is false news, pushed by the war machine, with the aim of creating fear. I also worry that NATO might be mad enough to provoke a direct conflict with Russia, in which case any mushroom cloud over Europe can be directly attributed to the war machine in Washington and London!
