I was delighted to see that US VP JD Vance has waded into the Henry Nowak case. This carries real weight and I am sure Downing Street will be furious! The Vice President of the United States, standing on the full authority of his office, is telling Britain that something has gone fundamentally wrong in the way it polices its own streets. That alone makes this intervention really significant. You can be sure the BBC will ignore!
Vance’s language was forceful. “Henry Nowak died the same way a civilisation dies,” he wrote, accusing British authorities of abandoning the 18‑year‑old, handcuffing him as he lay dying, and effectively believing a false allegation of racism over the words of a boy bleeding out on the pavement.
He went further, explicitly tying the murder to “the mass invasion of migrants” and the “politics of self‑hatred”, arguing that Nowak would still be alive if European elites had not embraced those ideas. That is not the usual careful language of diplomacy; it is the language of a politician trying to redraw the terms of debate, not just in America but across the West. Vance has consistently questioned free speech in the UK and now he is challenging British policing.
The timing of this also matters. Vance spoke after the Rubio State Department had already condemned “ideological conditioning and two-tiered policing” in Britain as symptoms of civilisational decline. In other words, his intervention comes on top of, not instead of, an official US statement. That gives his comments a double edge: they are both a personal broadside from the vice president and a further amplification of his own government’s formal position.
Downing Street’s pathetic reaction – accusing “those seeking to stir up division on our streets” – shows how uncomfortable this is for the Starmer government. For years, ministers have brushed off complaints about double standards in policing as exaggerated or politically motivated. Now they find themselves condemned on exactly those grounds by their closest ally, and at the highest level. Had they any shame, they should blush.
The Henry Nowak case is no longer just a British scandal. It has now been internationalised. The eyes of the Trump regime are on Starmer!
