Do you think that Sharia Law might enhance New York?
UK TV presenter Adil Ray does!
“Some say Mamdani may implement Sharia Law. He might. The heart of Sharia is social justice, welfare, fairness, charity and cohesion’?
Mr Ray, full name Raja Adil Rehman, is only saying what many of his co-religionists think. Sharia is warm and cuddly and kind to all. OK, big claim.
So let’s look at Afghanistan where they have the full throated version of Sharia Law.
What does this actually mean..?
Well, Sharia is the framework for all legislation and judiciary decisions. Taliban-appointed judges oversee the courts and are empowered to dispense punishments such as public amputations, lashings, stoning, and even executions for crimes considered severe under this interpretation. That public executions might liven Times Square I suppose.
Severe limitations are placed on women’s rights, ranging from bans on secondary and university education to requiring a male guardian (mahram) for travel and limiting access to workplaces, health care, and public life. Gender segregation is enforced in most settings. Women’s voices in public and presence in media are also suppressed. I guess New York’s feministas are going to have to change their wats
There are restrictions on religious minorities, particularly Shi’a Muslims. Reports have documented forced conversions to Sunni Islam and suppression of Shi’a religious observances and teaching.
Last August 2024, the Taliban codified a ‘Morality Law’ with strict codes on dress, public behaviour, and media content — including bans on images of humans and animals. The law intensifies controls on public and private life, especially for women. It would be interesting to see how this would deal with the rampant immorality in New York.
The Taliban Supreme Court now regularly announces punishments under Sharia across most provinces, which has included corporal punishment and execution. The enforcement is widespread and sometimes arbitrary, particularly in rural areas where “religious police” may act without rigorous judicial review.
So IF Mamdani were to introduce this dark ages pathology into New York, I think it fair to say it would be unrecognisable. Maybe that’s the plan?
And to those who think something like this could NEVER happen to a major city, here are images of Tehran pre and then during Sharia.
