It was heartening to watch this Swedish MEP speak out against Sharia Law in the European Parliament, emphasising that it has NO place in Europe.
“My daughter shouldn’t grow up in Europe steeped in Islamic values. We must support women; stop importing oppression of women; stop normalising and legitimising Islam against women; sharia law isn’t welcome in Europa”
Few sensible people would disagree with her.
However some EU countries beg to differ.
Earlier this year, a Vienna court ruled that a Sharia-based ruling is legally valid in Austria.
The case began when two Muslim men agreed that their dispute would be resolved by an Islamic arbitration panel. When a disagreement arose, the court ordered one of them to pay €320,000. The man refused, arguing that Sharia law is open to different interpretations and violates Austria’s fundamental values. But the Vienna court rejected the appeal and ruled that Austrian law allows arbitration systems for private disputes, as long as the outcome does not violate Austria’s “fundamental legal values”. Essentially, parties can choose to be bound by 7th-century rules, as long as the final outcome does not violate Austrian law.
Sweden itself has a problem. There are around 61 areas that Swedish law enforcement forces basically cannot enter and which are controlled by armed gangs and radical Islamists. The police consider 23 of these to be a particular risk and they house, among others, various ‘foreign fighters’. These people are protected as the Swedish authorities themselves have given them new identities and financial assistance for re-integration. Here are some “Swedish”muslims demanding Sharia.
So this issue is about a lot more than “women’s rights” under Sharia, it is about human rights and the essentially incompatibility of Sharia with European values. Since 2015, millions of Muslims have entered the EU, thanks to Angela Merkel’s embrace of open borders. They bring Sharia with them and that is a real problem for liberal EU leaders. Their instincts is to appease but the consequence of this is that Islam will assert legal supremacy. The alternative is to deport.
