War – what is it good for?

The drumbeat for war has dramatically increased over the weekend and it felt to me that we are being prepped for a possibly armed conflict with Russia that may involve possible conscription and a sudden change to our way of life. The irony is that Russia is NOT at war with us but that seems to be something European leaders and the UK want to change.
The very urbane Jacob Rees Mogg put it this way;
It seems that some of us are going to have to accept death as part of a war with an un-named enemy (but which is Russia). I have never trusted Rees-Mogg and this further confirmed my judgement. Jacob has six children and several of them could go and fight for the cause that he espouses. Let’s see that happen before the rest of us even contemplate sending our kids to die!
At the core of all of this is the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Ever since 2022, we have been conditioned to accept that this conflict is somehow “our conflict” and that the noblest thing “we” can do is send £££ billions in cash and weapons to the Zelensky regime. What is so odd about this is that Ukraine is NOT in NATO and so the UK has no obligation to defend it. In short, it is not our problem but we are encouraged to believe that if we don’t then before you know it, the Russians will be marching up the Mall on their way to taking the Palace. That’s how MAD this seems to me.
The European leaders act tough on Russia and barely a week goes past without Ursula Von Der Layen issuing more bellicose threats to President Putin. But the Europeans are mostly a paper tiger and they are dwarfed by Russian military power. The trick has been to talk tough and shelter under the US military umbrella. But since 2024. US President Trump has increasingly let Europe take the financial burden and it seems that he and Putin have a decent working relationship, to the chagrin of the war mongering media.
It’s hard to be sure as to where things actually sit between Trump and Zelenskyy. Take a look at this;
If we look back through history, we see war being used by politicians to distract and divert from their failures. It seems to me that we are living in such a moment and need to use our critical facilities to stop being seduced into the psyop.
The UK Government seems unwilling to defend its own borders but has unlimited enthusiasm for defending those of Ukraine. That cannot be right and we are entitled to wonder why such priorities prevail.
