Religious Education is part of the Curriculum in State schools here in Northern Ireland. To be honest, it’s always been pretty anaemic but it is understandably Christian focused, and that’s better than nothing. Until now.
The Christian religious education taught in schools in Northern Ireland is unlawful, the UK Supreme Court has ruled.
What?
In a unanimous judgement the UK’s highest court allowed an appeal by an unnamed father and daughter from Northern Ireland. In 2022, the High Court in Belfast ruled that the Christian-based RE taught at primary schools in Northern Ireland was unlawful.
However, the Department of Education subsequently won an appeal against that judgement. But on Wednesday the Supreme Court unanimously allowed the father and daughter’s subsequent appeal and dismissed the Department’s cross-appeal.
It appears that is was an anonymous “humanist couple” who became unhappy when their young daughter would pray before meals. She has been taught this in school. This caused grave emotional distress to the humanist parents and hence the legal battle.
So now the UK’s Highest Court has declared that whilst RE lessons can continue, they must be Christian focused. This is despite the UK being a Christian country with the King as had of the Church.
It seems to me that this is all about undermining the CHRISTIAN faith.
The demons on the Supreme Court stand indicted in the court of moral opinion.
It is a good thing to give kids a Christian grounding if possible. There should always be an opt out for those who don’t want it but the hope is many will. Now the Supreme Court wants to crush that, and all to appease a pair of humanists.
