It was absolutely inevitable that Starmer would sacrifice his key political adviser Morgan McSweeney in a final desperate act! Here is how the BBC chose to report it;
Morgan McSweeney has dramatically quit as Sir Keir Starmer’s chief of staff, after mounting scrutiny over his role in Lord Mandelson’s appointment as the UK’s ambassador to the US. The PM’s adviser had been coming under pressure after pushing for the former minister to be given the job, despite the peer’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein being publicly known about at the time. McSweeney said he did not oversee the vetting but wanted to take “full responsibility” for advising the prime minister to appoint him. It leaves Sir Keir battling to shore up his premiership as he continues to face anger from Labour MPs over his decision to hire the peer for the Washington role.
In summary, McSweeney has been offered up as the political sacrifice to try and stay the fall of Starmer but in my opinion it won’t be enough.
It was Starmer who APPROVED the Mandelson appointment! It was STARMER who chose to IGNORE MI5/MI6 guidance. And it is with STARMER that the buck has to stop. This removal of McSweeney is the act of a desperate man who knows that the end is near.
What we are witnessing in slo-mo is the demise of the Starmer era. Nothing can stop this happening and I will be surprised if he is still in position this time next week. Labour backbenchers are seething with anger, they never liked Starmer in the first place and many are much to the left of him. They want a more radical leader and I fear that is what they will get.
I want to see this Labour Government fall. Removing Starmer will hasten that day.
Starmer has now lost the man who guided him into the Leadership position of Labour in 2019 and then into Downing Street in 2024. Without McSweeney, Starmer is adrift focused only on survival.
