This is the rather lovely Lanyon Building, which fronts up Queen’s University, Belfast. Once upon a time, I was a student at that University and used to wonder through the Lanyon into the Quad and onwards to my lectures. Years later, I was elected onto the QUB Standing Committee of Convocation which was a body that held some influence over the direction of the University. And that’s when I knew it was doomed. I say inside the belly of the beast and I didn’t feel it. That was in the mid-90’s but then things got much worse.
You see Northern Ireland went through that euphemistically called “the peace process” (Surrender to terrorism) and at the head of that process was a certain US Senator George Mitchell. Mitchell was a senior Democrat and a close pal of Bill Clinton. I met him, despised him, but the world loved with him and Queen’s University heaped honour on top of honour on him.
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship was established by the US-Ireland Alliance in 1998 to honour Senator Mitchell’s role in the “Good Friday Agreement” and it funds American graduate students to study in Ireland, fostering leadership and US-Ireland ties. Yeah, right.
They weren’t finished lionising him. In 2016, the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice was established at the University.

But a few days ago, this all came crumbling down. Those pesky Epstein Files revealed that the Senator was a close friend of Epstein. Further, he remained in contact with Epstein years after the paedophile was convicted in 2008 for procuring a child for prostitution. This may not have been criminal wrongdoing, but was certainly the wrong thing to do. A 2011 email present among the three million documents released by the US Department of Justice shows Epstein planning to meet with Mitchell and former secretary of state for Northern Ireland Peter Mandelson in New York. Such curious company! There are some damning allegations against him which he denies and which have not been proven in court.
Queen’s University claims that there is no proof of any wrongdoing but it has severed all connections with Mitchell and yes, the statue came down the other day.
Mitchell is being memory holed by this wretched University but it doesn’t end there.
Can you guess who the Chancellor is? Yes, Hilary Clinton.
Can you guess who is closely associated with this University! Yes, it’s another Epstein pal, Bubba Bill Clinton (and yes, that’s Mitchell sitting beside him)
So there you have it – the gruesome connections of my alma mater. I am ashamed of it.
