Allowing a man once convicted in connection with a terror plot to stand for public office in England is a sign of a political class that has lost any instinct for basic self‑preservation. It’s suicidal empathy.
Shahid Butt, jailed by a Yemeni court in 1999 for forming an armed gang and conspiring to bomb the British consulate in Aden, an Anglican church and a Swiss-owned hotel, is now a council candidate in Birmingham. He served 5 years in prison. Whatever you think of Yemen’s justice system (!), the idea that someone with that sort of record should be now put before UK voters ought to trigger the alarm! Even more bizarre, he is standing as a “Pro GAZA candidate” which is odd as Gaza is thousands of miles away!
