The “One in One out” scheme with France that Labour trumpeted as a breakthrough took a turn for the worse today. It’s been revealed that one of those few illegal migrants that the UK had returned to France – has come back in on another dinghy! Yes, really?
It is understood the man is an Iranian national, and was initially detained on 6 August and was removed on 19 September, becoming the third person to be sent to France under the scheme. He then returned four days ago on 18 October. So he is back amongst us!
So what happens to the French approved migrant that arrived here in the UK in exchange for this boomerang migrant? Do we send them back to France? If not, it is two in and none out! That’s not great, is it?
This whole scheme is farcical. We all know it. What Starmer wants is catchy headlines as a substitute for actually doing something. But this scheme is so flawed, our border are so open, and the migrants come in such numbers that I suppose this was inevitable!
It’s worth pointing out that even if this scheme with the French did work, the UK will never see a nett reduction in migrant numbers because it is predicated on the idea that for every migrant the French accept from us we have to accept one from them. In other words this is a complete con, but it’s backfired so quickly that not even Starmer could have seen it coming. This policy is all at sea!
