WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF INSPIRATION?
The David Vance BriefingRead More
I guess we are all here because we love the written word.
I have been writing ever since my Dad bought me a second-hand dark green typewriter around 1970! And the motive for writing hasn’t ever really changed – I have thoughts inside me that I want to share. In particular, I REALLY like putting out the unfiltered truth as I see it, with maybe a few good one liners thrown in.
In short, I love word smithery and admire those who do it well.
Inspiration comes and sometimes it just goes! Most of the time, it isn’t a problem but if you also write with passion, moods can fluctuate! I am normally in an enthusiastic mood when I write. I sit and look at the blank screen until the thoughts start to flow and then the trick is to capture them quickly before they vanish. From what I understand, it’s a bit like writing a song, sometimes it arrives fully formed, but then sometimes it only partially arrives and I have to work really hard to pull it all together. What is most exciting is when I start to write in one direction and it then goes somewhere very different. You just follow the inner voice and never shy away from where it might take you. It’s important to write honestly and with little regard for popularity. The way I see it, you decide on the merit of the piece but I get to
The thing about Substack is the phenomenally good standard of writing I see here. So many of you are unbelievably good! All I can do is simply pour my own thoughts out and hope that you find them idiosyncratic and a little provocative! The outside world presses in here and sometimes I find that other pressures can limit my mood to write here.
But I am driven and somewhere deep in my mind I am Elvis Costello between 1977-1987. During that decade he was amazingly productive, eclectic and operating on his own creative and distinctive dynamic. That is pretty much what I try to do here.
I naturally go against the mainstream and love to challenge everything they say. I also have a healthy contempt for the political class and that takes me down many rabbit holes. Trying to keep a sense of balance isn’t easy in all of this but I do my very best to ensure I am reasoned.
I hope you enjoy my content which is pretty consistent!
