Honestly, you would need a heart of stone not to laugh at the news that the UK is reportedly discussing some sort of NATO-led military deployment to Greenland with European allies like Germany and France!
The claim is that these Europeans will strengthen Arctic security amid Donald Trump’s threats to seize the Danish territory. No final decision has been made, and officials describe it as ongoing “business as usual” NATO talks on deterring Russia and China in the High North
As you know, Starmer has also committed UK troops to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire happening. He didn’t tell us how many troops (lol) but now he is committing more troops to icy land of Greenland.
I have several questions!
Firstly, where are these troops coming from? The British Army has approximately 73,800 regular soldiers, an all time low. Around 20% of this number is already actively committed and with the need for back up of these commitments plus the requirement to have some troops at home, all these extra deployments seem fanciful, if not delusional.
Next, the population of Greenland is around 60,000, It’s the size of a medium sized English town. It doesn’t need any EU troops. Yet UK officials are said to have met with counterparts from countries including Germany and France in recent days to start the preparations for a NATO force to go there.
A Government source claimed:
‘We share President Trump’s view – Russia’s growing aggression in the High North must be deterred, and Euro-Atlantic security strengthened. NATO discussions on reinforcing security in the region continue, and we would never get ahead of those. But the UK is working with NATO allies to drive efforts to bolster Arctic deterrence and defence. The UK will continue to work with allies – as we always have – on operations in our national interest, protecting people back at home.’
This is so much self serving nonsense and it is a PR stunt at heart.
President Trump has indicated that the UNITED STATES, not NATO, will control Greenland, one way or another. This feeble attempt by Starmer to insert EU forces under the guise of NATO into the Greenland situation is both un-necessary and irrelevant.
Once again he is in self aggrandising mode, pretending to “help” Trump when all he would do is hinder.
