Blair for Gaza – what can go wrong?

Let’s start with the GOOD news that US President Donald Trump has announced a plan that could bring peace to Gaza, and that European and Middle Eastern leaders have welcomed it,

The plan, agreed by Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, proposes an immediate end to fighting, the release within 72 hours of 20 living Israeli hostages held by Hamas as well as the remains of the more than two dozen hostages who are believed to be dead – in exchange for hundreds of detained Gazans.

Hamas officials have been given the 20-point plan. The plan also says Hamas will have no role in governing Gaza, and it leaves the door open for an eventual Palestinian state – but Netanyahu later ruled this out.

The plan has many good intentions but of course it pivots on Hamas acceptance. This is by no means a done deal but if they DON’T accept, Trump has given Netanyahu the green light to go in and finish Hamas off. So there is real pressure on them. Either way, they loose control of Gaza. That has to be a good thing.

There are a few other points to this plan that concern me.

It sanitises the role of Mahmoud Abbas and the P.A. who themselves are brimming with barely disguised hatred of Israel. I see his organisation as just slightly less demented than Hamas.

But the most bizarre part of the plan is the idea that former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair will have a role in running Gaza! WTF?

The US president singled out Sir Tony for praise, labelling him a “good man” as he named him one of the political figures who would be on Gaza’s transitional governing body.

Mr Trump said “leaders that are very distinguished” would be on the board, adding: “And one of the people that wants to be on the board is the UK former prime minister Tony Blair. Good man, very good man. And some others.”

I can’t begin to tell you how sickening it is to hear Trump call Blair a “good man” who will now play a key role in running Gaza. Where does Trump get this advice from and why does he believe it? Like many Brits, I see Blair as the very personification of evil. Let’s not forget how his administration appeased the IRA, his crucial role in the totally unnecessary Iraq war, his systematic destruction of the UK constitution. Why would he want to be involved in Gaza? Why would Trump WANT him involved in Gaza? Do the Gazans want him involved in Gaza?

Sometimes, Trump makes mistakes as we all do. Bringing in Tony Blair is one of them.
