There will be three events in the next 9 months that will result in Sir Keir Starmer being removed by his own Party as Leader and at this point I think each is unstoppable. He may have basked in the spotlight and lapped up the applause at the Labour Party Conference but many of those clapping and a-hollering will also cheer on his political demise. One does not have friends in politics, merely acquaintances!
Here are the BIG dates to look out for;
Saturday 25th October sees the announcement of the contest to be Deputy Leader of Labour. As you know there are two candidates, Lucy Powell and Brigit Phillipson
Powell was SACKED by Starmer a month ago. If she wins, and she is the bookie‘s favourite this will be a complete reputation of Starmer’s leadership!
Next comes Reeves 2nd and final budget on 26th November. Given the £40bn+ black hole she had dug for herself, there is no way that this nightmare before Christmas becomes anything other than her political epitaph. There will be demands for sackings and this is when Ewan McSweeney walks the plank. He has been the power behind Starmer thus far so when he goes, things tighten up further for the PM.
The final date is Thursday, 7 May 2026. That ushers in elections that will include various local councils and mayoralties across England, as well as elections for the Scottish Parliament and the Senedd (Welsh Parliament). Labour is facing a wipe out. At that point, his own colleagues will demand that Starmer is removed. This will have to happen and a leadership contest completed before the Labour conference that takes place in October 2026. So the clock is taking I’m stronger will not be prime minister in 12 months time. These are the essential dates for your diary.
