It has happened before.

I am talking about the 781 years of Muslim rule that characterised Spain from 711 to 1492.

Here’s the potted history!

In 711 Muslim forces under Tariq ibn Ziyad, crossed from North Africa into Iberia via Gibraltar (named after him, Jabal Tariq!). By 718, most of Spain and Portugal fell, forming Al-Andalus, a prosperous Islamic emirate with Córdoba as capital. Muslim rule then endured for a massive 781 years amidst internal strife and Christian resistance in northern pockets. The Reconquista began with Pelagius’s 722 victory at Covadonga, birthing kingdoms of León, Castile, Aragon and Navarre. By 1479, Isabella of Castile wed Ferdinand of Aragon, uniting the Christian crowns. Their forces besieged Granada, the last muslim emirate, and it surrendered January 2, 1492—ending Muslim control.

Muslims refer to this defeat as “The Tragedy of Andalusia” – and they lament it.

Now, you might have thought that Spain would do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to learn from history and their centuries of cruel Muslim suppression but the answer is it has learned nothing whatsoever. In fact, things are getting worse.
